Warner Bros Netherlands is a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. – one of the largest internationally operating media companies. They are a creative, talent driven production company that develops, produces and distributes content in all the major genres: entertainment, factual and high quality TV drama.
They deliver original programs to both the public broadcasters and commercial channels, and also have a long track record in adapting international formats for the Dutch market.
1. The Challenge
To produce a Canada episode for Warner Brothers International’s hit Dutch television series, World’s Most Dangerous Roads (WMDR). The travel show takes two Dutch celebrities on a five-day journey from Edmonton to Vancouver to learn about local culture and to experience some of the most gorgeous and pristine landscapes in the world.
This was a challenging logistical feat that would take Cineflair’s team several months to plan and multiple weeks to execute. As seen in the map below, we planned for a trip of roughly 2000km, with stops across Jasper, Banff, Balfour, Kelowna and finally, Vancouver.
2. The Approach
The show World's Most Dangerous Roads is as much about discovering authentic cultural experiences as it is about dangerous roads.
Cineflair’s production team worked diligently with municipal and provincial government, tourism agencies, and film commissioners to find story subjects that fairly depict local culture along the route.
This allowed the crew to capture authentic stories to share with Dutch audiences to learn and discover about Canadian aboriginal culture, Alberta’s nature conservation efforts, Canada’s National Parks, British Columbia’s forestry industry, and much more.
3. The Results
Warner Brothers International’s creative team hailed the Canadian episode of WMDR as one of their best episodes in their entire 3 seasons run—thanks to the incredible scenery captured along the way, authentic storytelling and seamless production execution.
The episode was aired on Dutch television channels in May 2018 to an audience size of nearly one million Dutch viewers.
